You See "Contact Your Administrator", Now What?
You spotted a connector or skill in Claude that could save you an hour a day. The problem: it is greyed out, unavailable, or flagged with the message "Contact your administrator." Frustrating, yes, but it is normal, and it is fixable.
This post explains why it is blocked, who can activate it, where that happens, and most importantly how to frame your request so it moves quickly.
Why Is It Blocked by Default?
In Claude Team and Enterprise, Anthropic requires explicit activation before a connector or skill becomes available. This is not pointless bureaucracy: it is data governance.
A connector can:
- access data in a third-party service (Google Drive, Jira, Confluence...);
- forward requests to that service on behalf of the user;
- hold read or write permissions on organizational resources;
- process information belonging to your clients.
A skill (labelled compétence in the French interface) can also execute additional capabilities that go beyond Claude's default behaviour.
In other words: if any employee could connect without validation, you would lose control over what enters and leaves your systems. The default block is your protection, not an obstacle.
Who Is Your Claude Organization's "Administrator"?
In Claude Team and Enterprise, activating connectors at the organizational level falls to the:
- Organization Owner;
- Primary Owner.
In an Enterprise deployment, administrators or custom roles can then manage usage permissions, but the connector must first have been added by an owner.
In practice, who should you look for? Ask your IT department, your digital tools lead, the person who manages your SaaS subscriptions, or your organization's SSO administrator.

Where Does the Administrator Activate a Connector?
The owner needs to go to:
Organization Settings › Connectors
Then:
- Click Browse connectors.
- Select the desired connector.
- Click Add to your team.
- Configure the required authentication and permissions.
Once activated at the organization level, the connector becomes available to the team. Depending on the service, each user may still need to authenticate individually. In Enterprise, the organization can also configure managed authorization to grant access automatically to certain roles.

Where Does the Administrator Activate a Skill?
The path is slightly different:
Organization Settings › Skills
- Verify that Code execution and file creation and Skills are enabled.
- Under Organization Skills, click + Add.
- Import the skill's
.zipfile, which must contain aSKILL.mdfile.
Once provisioned, a skill is made available to organization members, subject to any other active controls.

How to Frame Your Request So It Gets Approved Fast
Most requests stall because they are vague. Your administrator needs to assess risk: help them do it in 30 seconds.
Three pieces of information are enough:
✦ Which tool: the exact name of the connector or skill. ✦ What for: what you concretely want to do with it. ✦ Which data: what the connector will access (and what it will not).
Message Template to Copy
Subject: Activation Request: [Name] Connector in Claude
Hi [Admin's name],
I would like the [Exact name] connector activated in our Claude organization.
Intended use: [E.g.: automatically pull open Jira tickets to prepare my sprint summaries without copy-pasting.]
Data involved: [E.g.: read-only access to the "Product" Jira project. No write access, no client data.]
Timeline: [E.g.: before July 15, the start of our new sprint cycle.]
Let me know if you need any additional information or a quick demo of what it does.
Thanks!
This format gives the administrator everything needed to say yes, or to ask the right questions if a risk assessment is required (think PIPEDA or provincial privacy legislation if the data involved includes personal information).
In Summary
A greyed-out connector or skill in Claude is an intentional security control, not a bug. The right approach:
- Identify your Claude organization owner (IT, SaaS lead, SSO admin).
- Send a clear request: tool + use case + data.
- They activate it under Organization Settings › Connectors (or Skills).
- You are unblocked.
No One Is Managing Your Claude Organization?
If your organization does not yet have a designated owner, an activation policy, or a process for evaluating connectors, you are not alone. Many Canadian SMBs have subscribed to Claude Team without setting up the governance that goes with it.
ProspèrIA can configure and oversee your Claude organization for you: activating the right connectors, defining roles, and establishing a usage policy that aligns with applicable privacy legislation, so your teams can work fast and securely.
